Hey! I’m Driving Here!
Sun was shining, so what better thing to do than to go for a bike ride. Shame I have the balancing skills of a one legged dog who’s drunk and on a skate that has one wheel whilst crossing the Channel during a storm:-/ Hmm… sorry! Ok but two of my kiddies (11 years old and 9 years old) can ride a bike, so we decide to cycle to the local swimming baths. Now this is only about a mile away so I thought this would be a good chance to teach them how to ride on the road safely, not to mention as my chair does a breath taking speed of 6.5mph I am supposed to drive on roads if driving at max speed 🙂
So off we go, everything is going well (cars do get bloody close though, sheeesh!) until we are nearly there, when I hear a voice.
Yes, I got pulled over by the Police *blink*
I know:-p
He told me that my kiddies need to get on the path. I asked why, he pointed at my son and said “his age, he has to drive on the path“, I said “oh yeah and what age is that?” with which he replied “you have to be 16 -17 to drive on the road“, Me “no you don’t” He then went on about my daughter was too young, me “no she is not”
So I just said “Okay” and waited until he’d gone and then just carried on as we were!
At the end of the day, my kiddies were being responsible on the road, they were wearing helmets, and technically under the Road Traffic Act it is illegal to cycle on the pavement and there is no age restriction on cycling on the road.
My eldest son said it all really when he said “I think he has nothing better to do!”
I’ve just discovered that, in law, my powered wheelchair is still referred to as an “invalid carriage” harhar and that I can use my blue badge if I want to park on double yellows!
